Can It Wait - Workology
Can It Wait Can It Wait? In the world of business, we are all well aware of âinterruptionsâ during our day. They consist of everything from that little email âchimeâ on our digital device, to telephones ringing (or vibrating), and coworkers stopping by for a chat. How many times have you been interrupted by a coworker who didnât heed to your body language of âIâm focused and in the middle of somethingâ and your productive flow comes to a screeching halt. After the person leaves, you find yourself thinking ânow where was I?â, only to find that the creative train you were riding has left the station. The other day, my young son was in the middle of some serious Lego construction. He was humming and singing and having a grand time. In my efforts to keep everyone âon scheduleâ, I was getting ready to start chatting with him to share what was on our âto-doâ list for the rest of the day. Something stopped me in my tracks and Iâm so glad it did⦠I decided my âinterruptionâ could wait, as it was obvious he was focused on his project at hand. He ended up working diligently for about 30 more minutes on his creation. If I had interrupted him, I doubt the creation would have seen the light of day. Can It Wait? I know the next time I get ready to âinterruptâ someone when I can clearly see they are otherwise engaged with a task⦠I will second guess the interruption and decide âis this interruption immediately important?â or âcan it wait?â
