How to Talk to Your Boss About a Co-worker You Hate - The Muse

How to Talk to Your Boss About a Co-worker You Hate - The MuseHow to Talk to Your Boss About a Co-worker You Hate So, how are things going at the geschftszimmer? I asked my dinner companion, a longtime business veteran who manages a small team. Last week, you mentioned some kind of conflict. What happened? She told me the story about how two of her employees were having trouble working together and then individually coming into her office to complain about the other person. Its frustrating, she said. Because one person will come into my office saying, so-and-so did this But when I ask the other person, did you do that? Theyll say, I never did that And vice versa. She sighed, heavily. Its becoming a he-said-she-said situation. I honestly dont know what to do.She ordered anotlageher martini. I mulled over the story, sipping my Old Fashioned. In your fantasy world... I began. When this kind of conflict happens, and an employee comes into your office to talk about it, what would you like t hem to say?She paused, considering. What I dont want is complaining and blaming. What I do want is a positive attitude. A desire to make things better, not just vent.OK, I said. So, what would that sound like, specifically?Several sips later, we came up with the following conversation script Hey Managers Name,Thanks for agreeing to meet with me today. I know youve got a lot going on, and I dont want to add anything more to your plate, but theres something Id like to discuss. Im hoping it wont take more than a few minutes. Before I begin, I want you to know that Im not here to vent or complain. Theres a situation thats come up- that Im a part of- and Im here to find a solution, with your help. So heres whats happening Whenever Other Persons Name does describe the thing thats causing the conflict, I feel describe how you feel. This situation has come up several times describe a couple of specific incidents. I respect Other Persons Name and I love being part of this team, but these fee lings are making it harder for me to do my work, effectively. And while I cant know for sure, Id have to guess that this situation is affecting Other Persons Name as well.I want to resolve this before it turns into a bigger problem, for both of us. Ive tried to resolve it on my own by describe something youve tried, but that didnt have the effect I was hoping for. I know theres a good solution, but Im not seeing it clearly, which is why Im here seeking some help. Im hoping that you might be willing to offer some guidance, hold a conversation with the two of us, or perhaps bring in an outside mediator or conflict resolution specialist. Again Im not here to vent or blame. Im aware that Im just as much a part of this conflict as the other person. Id really like to find a solution that makes both of us happy and strengthens the team. Thanks for listening.Something like that? I asked.Yes she said. If someone came into my office and said those words to me, calmly, Id be seriously impressed . Id think, this is a great person to have around. Someone I can trust to remain cool under pressure, and someone I might want to promote to a leadership level, someday. So, there you have it A boss-approved script to use the next time youve got a workplace conflict.Naturally, you may need to adjust the script depending on the nature of the conflict, your companys policies, and your relationship with your boss. But the main thing to remember isYoure there to find solutions- not rant, tattle, or uncork your emotions. Channel your inner peace-maker, and go set things right.

How to properly apologize if you messed up at work

How to properly apologize if you messed up at workHow to properly apologize if you messed up at workMaking mistakes is a perfectly normal part of being human. When you mess up, doing the right thing means owning it, learning from it, apologizing and moving on.Thats not how reality usually happens, because humans arent known for being graceful, and most of us dont want to do anything to make life more awkward than necessary. When you mess up, fessing up feels hard because it might disrupt what harmony you do have in life. So, though you dont mean to, you respond awkwardly. An effective apology shows you understand what happened from both sides, recognize the damage and communicate regret and responsibility. What role did you play? You must take real responsibility, and leave but or if out of the equation. You cant text or email yourself out of this. Body language and tone will aid in your authentic approach of having a real conversation from one human being to another. Here are five sit uations with five appropriate apologies for when you mess up at work.1. You didnt have the authorityYou made a mistake on an issue that proved more complicated than you bargained for, and whats worse, you gave the green light on a matter you had no authority on.Talk to your supervisor promptly before the scenario escalates and you end up in deeper water. Be honest, present the case as it stands now and listen. Accept responsibility and take the necessary steps as instructed. Assure your boss it wont happen again because you see this as a learning opportunity. What to say I did not have the authority to make that decision, and I felt I was taking the initiative at the time. Im sorry, and I assure you I will learn from this situation, so it doesnt happen again. I need your help to fix what went wrong. How do we proceed?2. You promised the client that pigs really can flyExceeding client expectations nails you gold stars in the fasson of business trips overseas and big bonuses. Naturally , you aim higher each time to show how much your organization cares and the value you contribute to the team. Good on you - until you promise the client that pigs really can fly.The problem is, they cant, unless you put them on a plane. That costs money, and you may have just wasted the clients time and company resources on something completely impossible.Share what went wrong with the team, and ask for help on bringing it to the client and any higher-ups who need to know. When you break the news, you should also bring a proactive solution to the table. What to say Unfortunately, what I promised you is not possible due to my oversight. I was eager and enthusiastic to make this happen for you, but I should have checked the budget/resources/etc. before giving that say-so. My team and I have worked out something you will love instead. Heres what weve got3. You offended your coworkerYou said something inappropriate and your coworker took offense, or maybe you made a passive-aggressive c omment. Perhaps you corrected your coworker in front of everyone and sounded like a jerk. Consider your motivations, and know that its best totalk about such matters in private. Your coworker may be a highly sensitive person, and you used an inappropriate communication style.Whether disagreeing over a project or the right way to grow sage, you realize the greater good of positive work culture means clearing the air. Maybe you meant it, maybe not, but focus on how you regret contributing to a rift at work. The following apology will only work for everyday mishaps in miscommunication or when you got impatient or frustrated due to stress. It wont work if you said something bigoted, sexist or racist, for example. What to say Im sorry for speaking to you like that. It was unprofessional and wrong. I plan to work on remaining calm in tense situations.4. You blankedYou forgot to complete a project or blanked on rushing a document to a client. Brain fog due to stress or another health conditi on can mess with your memory. In the short term, cortisol can help combat stress as it calls white blood cells to action and boosts the immune system, but in the long term, stress causes the production of cortisol tobind to the brains hippocampus cells, the region that generates new memory from experience. The binding can disrupt the process and permanently damage synapses.Sometimes, you turn into a space cadet for a day, perhaps due to the loss of a loved one or the short-term effects of a stressor youre not yet aware of. You can also get distracted by more positive matters, such a new love in your life.Your boss discovered you spaced and wants to know what happened, with a less-than-friendly look. What do you say to demonstrate that youre not making empty excuses or an insincere apology? Your response should be genuine and provide a concrete timeline for when and how you plan to complete the task.Dont make the details too personal, but if you are suffering from stress, anxiety or a loss, speak up. The company and HR can work with you to make your load a little easier and flexible while you move through everything.Forty-two percent of Americans report stress-related irritability, so work to know your triggers and take breaks to get out your head. If you need time away, take it.What to say Im going to be honest and say that finishing the task got completely away from me. I sincerely apologize. I would like to work with you to develop a plan of action. For this task, I will come in early and have it complete on your desk by noon tomorrow. At first, speaking up will feel awkward, but thats part of being human, feeling and doing uncomfortable things in addition to the struggles and joys of life. At work, trust and open communication are intrinsic to success and positive work culture.Let these answers guide you through tricky and tense situations to emerge on the same page with your boss or coworker. Adjust the answers to your situation and personality to make a st ronger connection in your communication. Its best to be accountable and be a proactive part of the solution. Take the higher road. And, if its truly not your fault, hereshow to handle misplaced blame in the workplace. This article was originally published on PunchedClocks.

Reduce on-the-Job Stress at your Workplace

Reduce on-the-Job Stress at your WorkplaceReduce on-the-Job Stress at your WorkplaceReduce on-the-Job Stress at your Workplace Lee, M.D.Job stress seems to be an accepted given in todays workplace either youre stressed about keeping the job you have or stressed about finding one, or youre managing escalatingemotions in the workplace or simply trying to maintain a drama-free workplace. If any of these scenarios is protracted, you might become mora than stressed and tip the balance over into super stress, a syndrome in which the constant pressure and pace of our modern, frenetic lifestyle dangerously manifests as post-traumatic stress disorder in the body. You see, our bodies have been hardwired to cope with stress since prehistoric times, but we are biologically ill-equipped to handle the kind of stress that accumulates in our lives today. Unfortunately, our brains cant distinguish between true physical emergencies (which trigger the cascade of stress hormones that help propel us out o f harms way) and mora mundane crises like daily hassles, deadlines, information and technology overload, difficult decisions, guilt, and worries. The physiological reaction is the same the hormonal surge of adrenaline and cortisol born of our instinctive fight or flight response.Because we dont give our bodies time to reset to a default state of relaxation in between perceived crises these days, these powerful hormones build up in the body and, in essence, keep the body switched to high alert, diverting energy and nourishment away from healthy ordnungsprinzip maintenance like proper digestion and nutrient absorption, hormone balance, and energy management. The result is a cluster of troubling symptoms that too few people associate with the root cause of stress immune deficiencies, high blood pressure, chronic headaches, weight gain, digestive distress, low sex drive, insomnia and brain fog.In addition to the physical ailments that can accumulate with the stress in your life, the top four telltale day-to-day signs that youve reached a super stress state might ring a more distinct bell for youYou cant really feel calm without reaching for a pill or glass of wine or other distraction (shopping, eating for example) to gain control. You have a sense that youve lost luster in your life or have difficulty tapping in to the joy in your life. You seem to have lost your ability to bounce back from disappointments or setbacks.Anxious has become the new normal. And if youre an employer or a manager, you might recognize the variety of clues that excessive stress is present in your work environmentEmployee productivity is sliding downward despite long hours logged in.Absenteeism is rising your employees are taking more sick days than they used to.Tolerance for each others shortcomings is thinner and tempers are flaring more easily humor is hard to muster in meetings.Lets face it even the average modern pace is now more like warp-speed and multitasking has taken on a whole new meaning. So its no wonder that were losing our collective patience and sense of humor. But super stress is a condition you can control and there are number of things you can do to help your body have a less dramatic reaction to the stress in your life, and to help your nervous system return to a default state of rest and calm in between perceived emergencies. In the workplace, take back control of your own job stress level and help your employees do the same by keeping the following in mindHit the proverbial deck walking instead of running. Youll get more out of your day (and more work done) if you take the start of your work day just a little more slowly. Plan to arrive a little earlier than has been your norm so when you start the day it can be with a sense of calm instead of frenetic activity.Exert just a little more control over your schedule. Overloading your day with meetings and commitments will only fuel your sense of panic. Dont overbook your staff with meetings, either sta y cognizant of other meetings and deadlines that they have in their schedule.Routinely push back from your desk and walk around your office floor or around the block. Your mind needs even just this little mental rest to maintain its highest level of productivity. Building in a small break between appointments or meetings will allow you to be more present and refreshed for the tasks at hand. Encourage your employees to do the same. This will also make for a more pleasant office atmosphere.Identify your stress type in order to begin the process of stopping your self-defeating patterns. Take the Superstress Solution quiz (in the book The SuperStress Solution) to gain insight on your resilience and coping style. Have your staff take it as well and then discuss the results.Laugh. When deadlines are looming and work is necessarily serious, a sense of humor is one of the first things to go. But its one of the best ways to maintain perspective and to calm the body too. Make time to laugh, t o giggle, to see the lighter side of life. Share your humor with employees and encourage them to do so with each other.Lose the perfectionism and negative self talk. Perfectionists are often the least efficient and beating yourself up for things not accomplished wont help you accomplish them any faster or better Communicate the same with your staff by giving them positive feedback, even when things go wrong.Use quality fuel eating processed foods and throwing back too much caffeine taxes the body. At office events, branch out from the usual bagels and donuts and serve fruit, nuts, or veggies and yogurt dip. Consider organizing an employee walking group or fitness challenge among staff.Notice Im not suggesting that you should necessarily look for another job or move to a cabin in the woods to avoid the stress in your life Do what you do, live your life. But remember this your body has naturally built-in measures to rebalance you back to calm. The short list above provides you with ways to help your nervous system remember how to access that healing state of mind. And remember to share and promote these practices with your employees theyll ultimately be more productive and youll have created a more pleasant work environment, too.Try this breathing exercise a few times a day to quickly access help to recalibrate your nervous system to calmWhen anxiety strikes or you find yourself focusing on negative thoughts, immediately exhale through your mouth. Now, relax your chest muscles to increase taking in air and breathe in through your nose, drawing in.Exhale again, slowly letting the breath out through your mouth as you count to five.Repeat four times.Author BioRoberta Lee, M.D.,author ofThe SuperStress Solution,is vice chair of the Department of Integrative Medicine, director of Continuing Medical Education and co-director of the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at Beth Israels Continuum Center for Health and Healing at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York Cit y. How to Ask for a Raise

How to Ask for a Raise How to Ask for a Raise Building Your Case 7 Steps to Asking for That RaiseAsking for a raise is no easy task. Be confident in your value, and prepare your argument with these steps.Youre good at your job and you like what you do. The only problem is youre simply not making as much money as you think youre worth. Thats okay. Theres a good chance that youre right. Its always nerve-wracking to go to the anfhrer and begin negotiating a raise. However, if you take these seven crucial steps before having that meeting, you can boost your confidence and your chances of getting the bump in pay that you deserve. Heres what to do to learn how to ask for a raiseStep 1 Review company policyBefore negotiating a raise, take a little time to review your companys policy on raises. If your company has it clearly defined in the handbook that raises are only permitted during annual reviews, you know that youre in a bad spot. You can still go for it, but youll have to address that i ssue directly and present a reason why your case is outside the scope of those guidelines.Step 2 Consider your recent (and future) performanceHave you been killing it lately? Not just for a week or two, but have you put together a few months of work that is clearly above and beyond your established role? What do your colleagues think? If you have received kudos, awards, and compliments lately, log them and use them as evidence in your favor. If you really want to wow the boss, present your ideas of how your work is going to get even better and help the bottom line in the months to come. The mora you can quantify your value to the company, the easier it will be for your boss to justify spending a little more on you.Step 3 Research market dataSo you feel like you are underpaid. Are you really? Learning how to ask for a raise means you need to know this before the big conversation. Check out websites like Salary.com or Payscale.com to check out the market data and discover what your po sition typically earns. Dont overlook the market that you are in. Cost of living, competition for jobs, and market size all factor into the pay scale for your position. If you discover that youre already on the higher end of the pay scale for your job, you may need to consider other options. Perhaps theres a promotion waiting for you.Step 4 Consider the timingNegotiating a raise isnt about you. This is about the other factors at your workplace. How is your company doing as a whole? Are profits on an upswing? You want to make your request when the going is good. Asking for an increase in pay when things arent going well for the company could be disastrous. You also want to consider the timing for your boss. If your boss is going through a difficult time, whether at the office or at home, you may want to wait until things relax a bit. Always aim for happy times when asking for that bump in pay.Step 5 Prepare for the objectionsWhen learning how to ask for a raise, Its time to think lik e a lawyer. If you are going to present your case as to why you deserve more money, you have to be ready for the opposing side to present reasons why they can say no. For instance, if they say Its a bad economy right now, but you know that your companys profits are way up, you can suggest that you are a big part of the reason that your company is defying the economy (but only if thats true). The more prepared you are for negotiating a raise, the easier it will be for you to have a calm and rational conversation.Step 6 Have a Plan B (and maybe C)Youve done your best, but a salary raise has been completely ruled out. Now what? Be prepared with other ideas that could make you happy. Would a few more days of vacation time work? Perhaps you could create some sort of bonus or incentive program with clearly defined objectives? Put some thought into what could make you happier at your job besides just a bump in pay. You may not end up with the raise you wanted, but you could still come out a head.Step 7 Be prepared for noWhat if you dont get the raise and the boss doesnt go for plan B or C either? Are you preparedtoupdate your resume and leave the company? Will you be okay with the status quo? You dont have to tell your boss what youre thinking, but you do need to have a plan because its always a possibility. Think it through and be ready to follow through if that situation should happen.Negotiating a pay raise is a tough thing to do. You have to be confident in your work and have the ability to sell the value that you bring to your company. The more prepared you are before you have that meeting, the better your chances of success. Its your career, go ahead and take charge of itReady to write the next chapter of your career? Delivering Persuasive Presentations

Delivering Persuasive PresentationsDelivering Persuasive PresentationsBrian Tracy went from rags to riches and has seen countless others follow that path, primarily by learning the steps in a sales cycle. It all starts with prospecting. Without effective (and frequent) prospecting, the sales cycle will stall. After prospecting, successful salespeople build trust and rapport. Once trust is established, its time to move on to identifying needs. Without having identified needs, both realized and unrealized, your chances for success greatly diminish. The next step in the sales cycle is learning how to deliver effective and persuasive presentations. As Brain Tracy stated, presentations should progredienz from the general to the specific. Follow the Path Persuasive presentations need to have a beginning, middle, and an end, and they must follow apre-designed path. The best way to visualize a presentations path is to see the beginning or opening of the presentation as the time to discus s the generalities of your solution. These could include an overview of your company (focusing primarily on how your businesss history and experience can create a positive impression on your customer.) The middle could be when you discuss identified needs and an overview of your solution. The ending may focus on specifics of your solution, how your company can best fulfill your customers needs, next steps and, of course closing the sale. Each presentation will be and should be different from all others, but follow a similar path. Winging it should never be your strategy when delivering a presentation. Trial Closes If you plan and logically organize each step of your presentation, not only will your customer be better able to follow the presentation, but doing so will also allow you the opportunity to trial close after each step before moving on to the next step. Trial closes are simple questions that not only give you a chance to take your customers buying temperature, but also gain their commitment to move to the next step. Trial closes can be as simple as asking your customer Do you agree with what weve covered so far? Trial closes are also great ways to uncover any objections that your customer may have. Often, customer objections are never presented until the final close. When this happens, it is often too late to save the opportunity. Getting customer objections out during the presentation allows you to more immediately address the objections and affords you time to either redesign your end solution or consult with your sales manager or fellow sales professionals on methods to overcome the objection. One or Many If you are confident with your presentation skills, going it alone allows you to control the flow and tempo of the presentation and eliminates the possibility of your customer disliking one of your presenters. Going it alone is usually the best choice if you have established a strong and positive rapport with your customers, but is not a good idea if your rapport is lacking. You should also think about asking co-workers to join your presentation if your presentation skills are weak or if your presentation involves technical discussions that are behind your skills set. One important thing to keep in mind for those who are presenting technical presentations Make koranvers that your technical specialist does not use tech jargon that your customers wont understand or that your customers are tech-savvy. Your Location If your office is either located in the basement of your home or an office building last renovated in 1974, you may want to consider hosting your presentation at an off-site location. Many hotels have meeting rooms that can be rented out and can help create a positive impression on your customer. Never just go on reviews when it comes to choosing a location. You need to visit any location you are considering and make koranvers that the presentation room meets your and your customers expected standards. Y ouve put in a lot of work to get to this stage of the sales cycle so why risk it by not making sure that your presentation location is one that will assist your efforts and not detract from them. Lastly, be aware that going overboard with your location may deliver the opposite effect of your intention. Bringing customers, who are price-conscious to a lavish meeting room, where you spare no expense, may lead them to believe that you are either trying to buy their business or that you have built a lot of profit into your deal.
